Elysha makes two changes at once and both pull the name away from where it started. A y replaces the i, and an sh replaces the s — and together they move a Hebrew prophet's name into the neighborhood of Alisha and Elisa. The man behind it inherited a cloak from his teacher and a double share of what came with it.

Where it comes from

The story of Elysha

Elisha follows Elijah in the books of Kings and asks, when his teacher is taken up, for a double portion of his spirit; the cloak falling from the whirlwind is the sign that he has it. The stories that follow are strange and domestic — a widow's oil that will not run out, an axe head that floats — and they made him one of the more vividly remembered prophets. English Protestants took the name up for sons. In America it has crossed almost entirely to daughters, helped by spellings like this one that make it look like a member of the Alisha family instead.

Meaning

God is salvation

From the Hebrew Elisha, joining el, God, to a root meaning to save or deliver. It is the same statement as Isaiah's and Joshua's, made with the elements in a different order — which is how a small stock of Hebrew words produced a very large number of names.

Three syllables, stress in the middle. The sh in this spelling is a real change from the Hebrew name, which has a plain s — so this version genuinely sounds different from Elisha, unlike most respellings.

Elysha sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1989, with 44 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Elysha went to 6 girls in 2025, but Elisha is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 65, which makes it the 895th most-given girls’ name of the year — 12,313 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 24,727 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 267,878 for Elysha itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Ellie is available and is among the most current short forms in American use.
  • The prophet behind it is documented and his stories are unusually memorable.
  • Three open syllables that sit well after almost any surname.
  • It is recorded for boys as well as girls, which matches the Hebrew tradition.
What to consider
  • Elisha, Alisha, Alicia and Elisa all sit close by and will be written instead.
  • The sh changes the sound, so this is not simply a respelling — relatives who know the biblical name may say it differently.
  • Nearly every child given this spelling is a girl, though the name is a man's throughout the Hebrew Bible.
