Elva
Masculine · “white or bright”
Elva is given to girls far more often — 31,697 girls against 817 boys since 1880. See Elva as a girl name
Elva is short, old in America, and honestly untraceable. Three separate origins are offered for it and each one is plausible, which usually means that more than one of them is true and that different families arrived at the same four letters by different roads.

The story of Elva
Ailbhe is the most interesting of the three roads. It was not a woman's name only: the best-known Ailbhe in the Irish record is a bishop of Emly, one of the early saints said to have been at work in Ireland before Patrick, and his feast is still kept. But the old stories also give the name to a daughter of Cormac mac Airt, who appears in the Finn cycle as one of the women who could answer riddles, which in those tales is the highest compliment available. The name has therefore been both a man's and a woman's for as long as it has been written down, which is a reasonable thing to say about Elva too, since the American record holds this spelling for both.
Meaningscholars disagree
white or bright, if the Irish road is the right one
Three readings compete. As an English form of the Irish Ailbhe, it carries a word for white or bright. As a clipping of Elvira, it belongs to a Visigothic name that came into Spanish. As a Norse-derived form it has been linked to the word for a river. Nothing in the American record chooses between them, and the name is short enough to have been arrived at independently several times.

Fashion outlook
Elva sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Two syllables, five letters, spelled as it sounds, and no part of it can be got wrong.
- It works in English and in Spanish without adjustment, which matters in a great many American households.
- It has a long unbroken run in American use, going back to the beginning of the records.
- Three origins are offered and none is settled, so the meaning question has no single answer.
- This spelling is given mostly to girls but is recorded for boys as well, and forms will occasionally guess wrong.
- In the United States it reads as a name of an older generation, which is either the appeal or the obstacle.
