Where it comes from

The story of Elijio

Eligius was born near Limoges around 588 and trained as a goldsmith. His Life, written by his friend Audoin, says he was paid to make one throne for King Chlothar II and made two from the gold, and that his honesty won him a place at court; under Dagobert I he ran the royal mint before becoming bishop of Noyon. Goldsmiths, metalworkers and blacksmiths took him as their patron. The comic song about Dagobert and his breeches dates from the eighteenth century and made the saint a household name for French children.

Fashion outlook

Elijio sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled meaning, chosen, and a saint with a warm place in French popular song.
  • The j spells the Spanish sound plainly, so Spanish speakers read it correctly.
  • Eli gives an easy short form in English.
What to consider
  • Spanish speakers expect Eligio and may correct the j.
  • English readers will not guess the pronunciation and may give it an English j.
