Where it comes from

Our story of Elige

Our story of Elige starts on an American porch in the nineteenth century, where a boy christened Elijah could spend his whole life being called Lige. Put the E of the full name back in front of that nickname and Elige appears on the page, a name with the prophet's opening and a sound of its own. Across the border the same letters were already a Spanish word, elige, from elegir, to choose, which comes down from the Latin eligere, the verb behind elect and eligible. A name nobody can trace sits between a prophet and a choice, which is a fair place for a name to stand.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No record documents where Elige came from. It resembles Elijah, whose short form Lige was heard in nineteenth-century America, and it resembles Eligius, the goldsmith saint; nothing written down connects it to either.

Pronouncing Elige

No settled saying survives. Readers today might try EE-lyj or el-EEZH; a Spanish reader will say EH-lee-heh, the everyday verb.

Elige sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1924, with 19 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Elige sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Short and unusual, with a long American record behind it.
  • Close in look to Elijah and Eli, so it does not feel foreign in an English-speaking family.
What to consider
  • Nobody will know how to say it on sight, and the family will have to choose a pronunciation and teach it.
  • Spanish speakers will read it as the verb choose, which is a pleasant word to be mistaken for.
