Elian
Masculine
Elian is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 15,268 boys against 112 girls since 1880.
Elian arrives in American records by more than one road: the Roman family name Aelianus, worn by the Greek-writing Roman author Claudius Aelianus in the second and third centuries; the Hebrew Eliyan; and a Welsh saint remembered in the church name Llaneilian on Anglesey. In the mouth it is two easy syllables that end open and unstressed, the same shape carried by Julian, Damian and Kilian.
How old is the name Elian?
Elian first appears in US birth records in 1996 — 29 years ago. The typical Elian is a kid of about 5 — this name's wave is very recent. About 15,000 people named Elian are estimated to be alive in the US today.

The story of Elian
Aelius was one of the Roman clan names, and its adjective form Aelianus passed into the Romance languages as Eliano in Italian, Élian in French, Elián in Spanish. A quite separate Elian belonged to a Welsh saint commemorated at Llaneilian on Anglesey, and a third, Eliyan, grew from Hebrew roots. The spelling that reached American birth records in the last thirty years came largely through Spanish, and its use in the United States has stayed closest to Spanish-speaking families, which is why it turns up in the same households as Matteo, Luis and Carlos. Its rise here has been recent and steady rather than sudden — a name that was already old in three languages before it became visible in this one.
Meaningscholars disagree
Either 'God has answered' or 'belonging to Aelius' — two separate lines lead to the same spelling
The Hebrew reading takes Elian from el ('God') with a form of the verb ana, 'to answer' — the name Eliyan is used in Israel on this understanding. The Romance reading traces it to Latin Aelianus, from the old Roman family name Aelius, whose own origin was already uncertain in antiquity; a link to Greek helios, 'sun', is often proposed and has never been proven. Separately, some Spanish-speaking families have built the name fresh from the parents' two names, which is how the best-known Cuban bearer received it.

Pronouncing Elian
EE-lee-un
English speakers usually stress the first syllable: EE-lee-un. In Spanish the accent falls on the last, eh-lee-AHN, and the written accent in Elián marks exactly that. Both are correct for their language, so it is worth deciding early which one your family will use and which spelling goes on the birth certificate.

The Clayton test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Elian's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Clayton climbed just as high around 1988, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Clayton's path sketches the road Elian is walking now.
Elian is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- Eli is ready-made as a short form and already a standard given name in English, so the everyday version needs no introduction.
- Spelled close to the way it sounds in both English and Spanish, which keeps it workable in a bilingual household.
- Sits inside a familiar pattern — Julian, Damian, Kilian — so the rhythm reads as normal even where the name itself is new.
- The Latin line runs back through Aelianus to Roman naming, giving it a documented record long older than its recent American wave.
- The stress is genuinely split: Spanish puts it on the last syllable, English on the first. Expect to correct people in one direction or the other for life, and to decide whether the accent mark in Elián stays on official paperwork.
- It sits close to Elias, Eliana and Ellian, so it will be misheard and respelled fairly often — usually a one-second fix, but a frequent one.
- Adults who followed the news around the turn of the millennium may think first of Elián González, the Cuban boy at the center of an international custody case. Younger people generally have no such association at all.
- The name is climbing rather than settled, so a child born now may be the only one early on and one of a handful later.
