Where it comes from

The story of Elenore

Eleanor, born about 1122, inherited Aquitaine at fifteen, married Louis VII of France, accompanied him on the Second Crusade, had the marriage annulled, and married Henry Plantagenet eight weeks later; two of her sons became kings of England. She was imprisoned from 1173 for supporting their rebellion and released only on Henry's death, after which she governed as regent. Her name came to England with her and became one of the standard English women's names. Elenore is a phonetic American respelling that drops the a, and its best year in United States records is 1924.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The name's origin is not recovered. It appears in Occitan as Alienor, and the medieval explanation that it is Latin alia Aenor, the other Aenor, after her mother, is a story rather than an etymology. Derivations from Germanic and from Arabic have both been proposed. The connection to Helen is a later assimilation and is not the source.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names.
