The story of Elazar
In the Hebrew Bible Elazar is the son of Aaron who inherits the high priesthood, and the name stayed with priestly families long after. Greek translators wrote it Eleazaros, Latin made that Eleazarus, and the shortened Aramaic form of the same name gave the Gospels their Lazarus, so the name reached Europe twice over, once whole and once cut short. The spelling Elazar, without the Greek vowel, is the one Hebrew keeps, and it came to the United States with Jewish families rather than through the Christian bible.

The Abu test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Elazar's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Abu climbed just as high around 1973, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Abu's path sketches the road Elazar is walking now.

The trade-off
- A full-length formal name with two ready short forms, Eli and Laz.
- The meaning is settled and can be said in three words.
- It is at home in Hebrew, Spanish and English records without changing shape.
- English speakers reach for Eleazar or Eliezer when writing it down; the missing e is the whole difference.
- Eli is now so widely used that a child called Elazar may meet several others under that short form.
- The stress moves depending on who is speaking, so the name is said two ways in one life.
