The story of Edouard
In 1865 Édouard Manet showed Olympia at the Paris Salon, a nude who looks straight at the viewer, and the crowds were so outraged that guards had to protect the canvas. In 1860 Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville used his phonautograph, a horn and a stylus tracing sound onto soot-blackened paper, to record someone singing 'Au clair de la lune'; he meant it to be seen, not heard, and it was only in 2008 that researchers turned the tracings into sound. The name came to America with French and French-Canadian families.
