The second half of Edmund is a word for a hand, and specifically a hand held over somebody. Mund meant protection in the concrete sense: the hand of a lord or a father extended over a household, and the legal duty that came with it. A name ending in it is a promise rather than a description.

Where it comes from

The story of Edmon

The English king who carried it was killed by a Danish army in the ninth century and became the country's patron saint for four hundred years afterwards. The story that grew up says he was tied to a tree and shot with arrows, then beheaded, and that when his followers went looking for the head it answered them when they called, being guarded by a wolf that had taken it between its paws and would not eat it. The wolf then walked with them to the burial. It is a legend and it is a very old one, and it is why medieval English churches are full of carvings of a wolf holding a crowned head, an image that meant something instantly to people who could not read.

Meaning

Wealth's protector

Old English ead, wealth or prosperity, and mund, a protecting hand. The first element is the same one at the front of Edward, Edgar and Edith, and the second stands at the end of Raymond and Osmond. Both halves are transparent, which is unusual for a name this old, and this spelling changes only the vowel of the second.

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The second vowel is reduced to nothing, which is why the o here and the u in the standard spelling and the o in the French version are all said the same way.

Edmon sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1924, with 35 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Edmon sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves have transparent meanings, which very few names of this age can offer.
  • Ed and Ned are two short forms centuries apart in flavor.
  • It is recognizable in French, Spanish and Italian with almost no change.
What to consider
  • Edmund and Edmond are both far commoner and will be written by anyone taking dictation.
  • It reads as an older man's name in America, though it has begun to shift back.
  • The final syllable is unstressed, so the spelling difference cannot be heard.
