The story of Edgardo
Edgar was an English king in the tenth century and the name survived the Norman conquest, which most Anglo-Saxon names did not. Walter Scott used it in a novel about a Scottish family feud; Donizetti made an opera of the novel in 1835, and Italian audiences met Edgardo as its tenor. The name entered Italian and Spanish use from there, which is an unusually clear and well-dated route, and it reaches United States records from Puerto Rico, Mexico and Italy alike.
Meaning
wealthy spear
Old English Eadgar joins ead, 'wealth, prosperity', to gar, 'spear' — a compound of the ordinary Anglo-Saxon kind, in which two admirable nouns are set side by side without any grammar between them. The reading is documented. Edgardo is the Italian and Spanish form, with the vowel ending those languages require.
