The story of Edd
The ead- names were the royal stock of Anglo-Saxon England and were among the very few English names to survive the Conquest in strength, largely because Edward the Confessor was canonized. Ed was the ordinary clipping for a thousand years. The doubled spelling appears in nineteenth-century American registers as a way of making a two-letter name look like a name, and it peaked around 1885.
Meaning
wealth, fortune
From the Old English ead, 'riches' or 'blessedness'. Anglo-Saxon naming paired two elements: Edward is ead plus weard, 'guardian of wealth'; Edwin is ead plus wine, 'friend'; Edgar is ead plus gar, 'spear'. Edd is that shared first element with a doubled consonant.

Fashion outlook
Edd has already lived its whole cycle: it rose, had its era, and has stepped off the charts. The fashion question is behind it — what lies ahead is the waiting room where revivals begin, once a name's first generation has grown distant enough for it to sound fresh again.

The trade-off
- Five different traditional names can stand behind it, so the formal version stays an open choice.
- The doubled letter gives a very short name a little more presence on the page.
- One syllable, never misheard and never mispronounced.
- The second d does no audible work, so the spelling has to be given every time.
- Given outright it stays informal, and it is strongly period-coded to the nineteenth century.
