The ead- names were the royal stock of Anglo-Saxon England, and they were among the very few English names to survive the Norman Conquest in strength — largely because Edward the Confessor was canonized, which made his name acceptable to the new French-speaking aristocracy. English kings carried it for six centuries after that. The short form was ordinary speech for just as long, and nineteenth-century American families began registering it outright, putting it in the top sixty for boys in the 1880s.
