Where it comes from

The story of Dyanne

The Aventine was outside the sacred boundary of the city, which is where foreign cults and the temples of the plebeians went, and Diana's shrine there was associated with the Latin League rather than with Rome alone. Slaves had a festival day; her sanctuary in the Alban hills was staffed by a priest who held office by killing his predecessor and would be killed by his successor in turn. It is one of the strangest institutions in Roman religion, and it made the goddess a good deal less decorative than the marble suggests.

Meaningscholars disagree

divine, or of the sky

The name comes from an old Italic word for the bright sky, related to the words for a day and for a god. This spelling adds a y and a final e to Diane, neither of which is audible; the y marks the name as a woman's in the American convention of the 1930s and 1940s, and the e is a flourish.

How the name formed

  1. an Italic word for the bright sky
  2. Diana's cult on the Aventine and in the Alban hills
  3. Diane established in French and English use
  4. American spellings mark the women's version with a y
  5. Dyanne appears in the record in the 1930s

Fashion outlook

Dyanne sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is entirely familiar and needs no explanation anywhere.
  • Anne and Dee are both available and both work on their own.
  • The goddess behind it is a great deal more interesting than her reputation.
What to consider
  • Dianne and Diane are both commoner and will be substituted constantly.
  • The spelling dates a certificate closely to the middle of the last century.
  • Two silent letters is a lot to carry for no audible return.
