Diane de Poitiers wore black and white for forty years and may have poisoned herself trying to stay young. She was twenty years older than the king who loved her, effectively ran the court, and when her remains were examined in this century they were found to contain gold at levels high enough to have killed her.

Where it comes from

The story of Dyann

She drank a preparation of gold, which was a fashionable elixir of the period and was supposed to preserve youth. Her hair and bones, exhumed and analyzed, carried concentrations hundreds of times normal. Contemporaries described her as extraordinarily well preserved into her sixties and remarked on her white skin; the analysis suggests chronic gold poisoning, which produces exactly that pallor. She kept her position for the whole of the king's reign and lost everything the week he died.

Meaningscholars disagree

divine, or of the sky

Diana is a Roman goddess whose name comes from an old word for the bright sky, the same root as the words for a day and for a god. This spelling replaces the i with a y and doubles the final n, which is an American convention of the 1930s and 1940s for marking a name as a woman's — neither change is audible.

How the name formed

  1. a Roman goddess named from the bright sky
  2. Diane established in French and English use
  3. a French royal mistress makes it famous in the 1500s
  4. American spellings mark the women's version with a y
  5. Dyann appears in the record in the 1930s

Dyann sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1951, with 46 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Dyann sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is entirely familiar and needs no explanation.
  • The goddess behind it is one of the best known in Europe.
  • The spelling is genuinely rare while the name is universal.
What to consider
  • Diane and Diann are both commoner and will be substituted constantly.
  • The spelling dates a certificate closely to the middle of the last century.
  • Most readers will treat the y as an affectation.
