The reason a diamond is what people give when they propose is an advertising campaign. Before the nineteen-forties the stone was one option among several; a single company controlled almost the entire supply, hired an agency, and the slogan that came out of it is now treated as a tradition older than anybody alive.

Where it comes from

The story of Dyamond

The company that had spent decades buying up mines and controlling how many stones reached the market had a problem in the nineteen-thirties: demand had collapsed and there were more diamonds available than anybody wanted. The answer was to make them mean something. An advertising agency was hired, films were supplied with engagement scenes, a rule of thumb about how much a man should spend was circulated, and a four-word slogan was written that has been called the best of the century. Within a generation the practice was universal in America and had been exported to Japan, where it had no history at all and took hold within twenty years. The stone is not rare. The idea that it is was manufactured, deliberately and successfully.

Meaning

Diamond

The name is the English word for the stone, used directly, in the same way that Ruby, Pearl and Opal are. The word itself came through French and Latin from a Greek adjective meaning unbreakable. Nothing about the name describes a person; it names an object and lets the object do the work.

DY-mund

Two syllables in ordinary speech and three if said carefully, which is true of the word as well as the name. The y writes the same glide the i carries in the standard spelling and changes nothing at all.

Dyamond sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2000, with 98 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Dyamond sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is immediate and needs no explaining to anybody anywhere.
  • It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
  • The y makes the written name distinctive without making it hard to read.
What to consider
  • The record carries this spelling for boys as well as girls, so it signals nothing on a form.
  • Diamond is the standard spelling and this one will be corrected constantly.
  • A precious-stone name invites comment of a particular kind, and the child will hear it.
