Where it comes from

The story of Dwan

Dubh linn means black pool, and it was the name of a tidal pool on the Poddle where it met the Liffey, next to which the Vikings built their trading post; the Irish name for the city today is a different one entirely, Baile Atha Cliath, the town of the hurdled ford, so Ireland's capital has two names in two languages that describe two different features a few hundred meters apart. The black in the pool is peat rather than anything sinister. The same word is all over the surname stock because dark hair and coloring were an obvious way to distinguish one man from another in a small community, and it survives in English spellings that give no hint of where it came from.

Little dark one

If the name comes from the Irish surname, the root is dubh, black or dark, with a diminutive; that is the likeliest account. If it is instead a respelling of Duane or Dwayne, the trail runs to the same Irish word by a different road, since those are anglicizations of the same element. Either way the color is at the bottom of it, and either way the American spelling has lost the evidence.

DWAHN

One syllable with a w-glide after the d, which English allows at the start of a word only in a handful of cases. Some families say duh-WAHN in two syllables, which is closer to Duane, and the spelling supports both.

Dwan sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1983, with 173 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Dwan sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Four letters, one syllable, and nothing silent or ambiguous in it.
  • It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
  • The Irish element behind it is real and can be traced across a whole family of names.
What to consider
  • The record carries this spelling for girls as well as boys, so it signals nothing on a form.
  • Duane, Dwayne, Dwain and Dwan are four spellings of closely related sounds and will be confused.
  • One syllable gives nothing to shorten and no formal version to grow into.
