One vowel separates this from the standard spelling and it is the only change. Dustin has an i in its second syllable; this has an a, and since that syllable carries no stress at all, the vowel reduces to a neutral sound either way. The two spellings are audibly identical and visually distinct, which is the whole point of the exercise.

Where it comes from

The story of Dustan

The best-known bearer of the standard spelling was named after a silent-film actor. Dustin Hoffman's parents took the name from Dustin Farnum, a star of westerns in the nineteen-tens and twenties who is almost entirely forgotten now — he played the lead in the first feature film shot in Hollywood. So a name that most people date to the nineteen-sixties was already being given half a century earlier, and the chain runs from a Norse compound through a Norman surname to a cowboy actor to a Hollywood career and out into a whole generation of American children.

A Norse compound is the usual derivation, reaching English through a medieval personal name and then a surname. A separate English name of similar shape may also have fed the modern form.

Fashion outlook

Dustan sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Dusty sits inside it as a short form with a completely different register.
  • The meaning is concrete and easy to explain.
  • The sound is entirely familiar and never needs repeating.
What to consider
  • Dustin is far commoner and this gets corrected constantly.
  • It is closely tied to the decades of its use.
  • The Norse derivation is likely rather than proven.
