Where it comes from

The story of Dugan

The Uí Dhubhagáin were a family of hereditary scholars in Connacht, and Seán Mór's verse survey of Ireland's families was finished after his death by another poet, Giolla na Naomh Ó hUidhrín. The two poems were edited and translated by the scholar John O'Donovan in the nineteenth century and are still read as a map of medieval Irish lordship. Irish emigrants carried the surname to America in its English spellings, and Dugan's use as a first name follows that surname.

Fashion outlook

Dugan sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Short and phonetic: two syllables, spelled the way they sound.
  • A real Irish surname with a documented family of poets and historians behind it.
  • Easy to say in any American accent.
What to consider
  • Duggan is the more common surname spelling, so people will add the second g unless told otherwise.
  • It reads as a family name first, and a child with it will sometimes be asked which name is the first one.
