The story of Duane
James Duane was a lawyer who sat in the Continental Congress, helped write the state constitution, and was made mayor of New York in the year the British left. He spent his term putting a city back together that had lost a third of its buildings to fire and most of its trade to the war, and he has a street for it. Two centuries later a pharmacy on that street took the name, grew to a thousand shops, and made the word so ordinary in New York that almost nobody there hears it as a man's name at all.
Meaning
dark, or black-haired
The Irish surname behind the name is built on the word for black or dark and was descriptive before it was hereditary. As an American first name it arrived through Irish families and then spread far beyond them; by the middle of the last century a great many boys carrying it had no Irish connection whatever, which is the ordinary fate of a surname that becomes fashionable.
How the name formed

Fashion outlook
Duane sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.
