The story of Duan
In Irish and Scottish Gaelic a duan is a poem or song, and one of the most important early records of Scotland is the Duan Albanach, the Song of the Scots, a medieval verse list of the kings of Scotland down to Malcolm III. On the other side of the world, the Duan family founded the Kingdom of Dali in what is now Yunnan and ruled it for about three hundred years, until the Mongols took it. The American Duan comes from neither: it is Duane, the Irish surname, written with one letter fewer.
