Duaine
Masculine · “dark”
Duaine adds a vowel that changes nothing. The name is one of four or five American tries at a single Irish sound, and this version inserts an i that no pronunciation uses — a small piece of decoration in a family of names where the spelling has never settled and probably never will.

The story of Duaine
Duane Allman played slide guitar with a glass medicine bottle. He had been given one by his brother while he was ill in bed with a cold, started sliding it up the strings, and worked out over the following months a way of playing that nobody had used in that music before — melodic rather than percussive, closer to a voice than to a guitar. He was a session player in Alabama before he had a band of his own, played on records by other people that are still famous, and was killed on a motorcycle at twenty-four. The bottle is in a museum.
Meaning
dark, or black-haired
The Irish surname behind it is built on the word for black or dark, and it was a descriptive name before it was a family one. Irish surnames of that kind are extremely common — color words for hair, complexion and temperament account for a large share of them. What English did to this one is the usual story: the original spelling was unpronounceable to English eyes, several respellings were attempted at once, and none of them ever became standard.

Fashion outlook
Duaine sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The sound is entirely familiar and needs no explanation.
- Wayne is available inside it as a complete name of its own.
- It has a real Irish surname behind it with a concrete meaning.
- Every document will restore one of the commoner spellings.
- The extra vowel does nothing audible and looks to most readers like an error.
- It is closely dated to the first half of the last century.
