The story of Draco
Draco wrote Athens's first written law code around 621 BC, prescribing death for a great many offenses; a later commentator said it was written in blood rather than ink. Solon repealed nearly all of it within a generation. Draco is also a northern constellation. The name appears in American records in current use.
Meaning
dragon, serpent
From the Greek drakon, 'serpent' or 'dragon', probably from a root meaning 'to see' — the sharp-eyed one. The Athenian legislator Draco carried it, and his name gives English 'draconian'. The word is ordinary Greek and the meaning undisputed.

About 1 boy in 16,267 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 18,171 for Draco itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Chirstopher test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Draco's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Chirstopher climbed just as high around 1981, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Chirstopher's path sketches the road Draco is walking now.
Draco sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The dragon meaning is concrete, vivid and undisputed.
- A constellation and an Athenian lawgiver both carry it.
- Drake is available as a related name with a real record.
- The lawgiver's code is the origin of 'draconian', which is not a compliment.
- A fictional schoolboy carries a strong association for a generation.
- It is very grand for everyday use.
