Where it comes from

Our story of Doyce

There is one Doyce in English literature, and he is worth knowing. In Dickens's Little Dorrit the inventor Daniel Doyce spends years trying to get a patent through the Circumlocution Office, a government department whose entire purpose is to find out how not to do it. He is patient, competent, and quietly indestructible, and he is one of the very few working engineers in Victorian fiction who is treated as a hero. That is the sort of company the name keeps. The oy sound in it has its own history: it came into English with the Normans, and almost every English word that contains it — joy, choice, royal, voice, employ — is a French loan. The sound is a borrowed one, which makes this small set of names quietly French underneath their American surface.

Not established

No source is documented. It may be a spelling of the Irish surname Doyle worn into a different shape, or a name built to rhyme with Royce and Boyce, or a family name carried down until nobody remembered whose. The record holds it without explanation and nothing in it decides the question.

Fashion outlook

Doyce sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • One syllable, no ambiguity in the sound, and almost nobody else carrying it.
  • It reads as a family surname, which gives it weight without being ornate.
  • It works on a child and on an adult in exactly the same way, which short names do best.
What to consider
  • It will be heard as Joyce, Royce or Boyce on the phone every time, because one consonant is all that separates them.
  • The spelling is recorded for girls as well, and in the recent thin record it has gone to both.
  • There is no meaning and no documented origin to hand over, only the shape of the name itself.
