The story of Dossie
Pet names ending in -ie were written on American birth records as full names, and Dossie was one of them, used for girls from Theodosia and Dorothy. For boys it drew on the surname Doss, and the best-known Doss is Desmond Doss, an Army medic and Seventh-day Adventist who refused to carry a weapon and, on the escarpment at Okinawa called Hacksaw Ridge, carried wounded men to safety one by one. He received the Medal of Honor.

Fashion outlook
Dossie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It works for a girl or a boy, each by its own road.
- It is warm and old-fashioned.
- It is almost never given now, so it is distinctive.
- It reads as a nickname, and some will ask for the full name.
- Because the record splits it evenly, nobody will know from paper whether a Dossie is a girl or a boy.
Nobody names a baby alone.
