Doshie is an old American name, commonest in the early years of the record, and the likeliest account of it is that it is the tail end of a much grander name. If so, the piece it kept is a Greek word that English uses every time someone opens a medicine cabinet.

How old is the name Doshie?

Doshie was already in use when US birth records began in 1880 — it is at least 145 years old. The typical Doshie alive today was born around 1916, making them about 109 years old. Fewer than a hundred people named Doshie are estimated to be alive in the US today — a true one-of-a-kind name.

When was the name Doshie most popular?

Doshie peaked in 1884, reaching #640 nationally. See the whole 1884 chart.

Where it comes from

Our story of Doshie

The Greek verb for giving supplies more English than anyone expects. A dose is a giving: the amount handed over at one time. An antidote is something given against. Theodosia is God's giving, the same word with the same ending, and it was a real name in the Greek-speaking world and then in Europe, and then in America, where the South was fond of it. Long names get worn down from the front in ordinary speech, and what survives is the end. Doshie sits exactly where that wearing would leave you. It is a reasonable account and an unproven one, and the honest page says so rather than promoting a good guess into a genealogy.

Theodosia is the usual suggestion and the sound supports it, but nothing documents the connection. Names of this period were often written down as they were said, and what was said may have had no longer form behind it at all.

Doshie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1916, with 23 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Doshie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two syllables and six letters: easy to say, easy to write, easy to remember.
  • It has a real place in the early American record rather than being a modern invention.
  • It is genuinely rare without containing a single difficult sound.
What to consider
  • It reads as a name of a much older generation, which is either the appeal or the obstacle.
  • Two pronunciations are in circulation and the spelling settles neither.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has a likely answer and not a certain one.
