Dorthey

Feminine · “gift of God”

rare

Dorthey drops a vowel that nobody says. Dorothy has four letters in the middle that most speakers reduce to almost nothing, and in ordinary speech the name comes out as two syllables and a half rather than three. This spelling admits it. What it adds at the end is a different matter, and belongs to the American habit of closing a name with a surname ending.

Where it comes from

The story of Dorthey

A book published at the beginning of the twentieth century put a Kansas girl in a fairy country and became the most successful American children's book of its generation, with thirteen sequels and a stage version that ran for years. Nearly forty years later a film of it appeared, and the film has been shown on American television every year since, which is a form of continuous exposure no other work of the period has matched. The name climbed with the books, held through the film, and only really receded when the association became so complete that the name stopped being available for anything else. That is the risk of a very famous fictional bearer: the name is carried for a long time and then becomes a costume.

Meaning

gift of God

Two Greek elements, one meaning gift and one meaning god, and the reading is settled. The name is one of a small set built from those two words in different orders, which produce different names that mean the same thing. Neither the dropped vowel nor the added ending in this spelling touches the sense; both are about how the word looks and how quickly it is said.

How the name formed

  1. Two Greek elements meaning gift and god
  2. Dorothea in Latin and then Dorothy in English
  3. A famous fictional bearer from the turn of the century
  4. Dorthey, dropping a vowel and adding a surname ending

DOR-thee

Two syllables in this spelling, where the standard one suggests three. That is the entire point of the respelling: it writes what fast speech actually produces rather than what the Greek original had.

Fashion outlook

Dorthey sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is universally known and needs no explanation anywhere.
  • Dot, Dory and Thea are three very different short forms from one certificate.
  • The meaning is short, warm and easy to tell a child.
What to consider
  • Dorothy is the standard spelling and this one will be corrected into it constantly.
  • The film association is total for most Americans and arrives before your child does.
  • The name is strongly of an earlier generation and has only just begun to return.
