The story of Dorine
French made a lot of names this way in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, taking a syllable off an existing name and fitting -ine to it: Doreen from Dora, Nadine from Nadia, Ondine, Delphine, Céline. English borrowed the finished results and then produced its own spellings of them, so that the American record carries Dorine, Doreen and Dorene side by side, said the same way and written by three sets of conventions. Only the first is the French spelling; the second is Irish in origin, from an entirely different route, and the third is the American one that writes the sound down plainly.
Meaning
gift
The Greek doron means a gift, and it stands at the front of Dorothea, Theodora, Isidore and Pandora. The ending here adds smallness or affection and no sense of its own.
