Dorie is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 1,735 girls against 36 boys since 1880.
Three names shorten to this and only two of them are related. Dorothy and Theodora are the same two Greek words in opposite orders, and both mean a gift of God; Doris is something else entirely, a name from a people rather than a phrase, and it has nothing to do with either.

The story of Dorie
The people that third name belongs to arrived in Greece and nobody can say from where. The Dorians are the tribal group the Spartans claimed descent from, they are said to have come south at the end of the Bronze Age, and the archaeological evidence for any such migration is thin to the point of vanishing — the whole account may be a genealogy invented later to explain differences in dialect. So a name may descend from a people whose existence as a migrating group is itself a reconstruction, which is about as uncertain as an etymology gets.

Fashion outlook
Dorie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is short, warm and completely easy to say on first hearing.
- It works across the sexes without straining for it.
- The spelling can only be read one way.
- No meaning can be given, because three parents are possible.
- The spelling is recorded for a few boys, but nearly every child with it is a girl.
- It reads as a short form to most people even when it is the legal name.
Nobody names a baby alone.
