Where it comes from

The story of Dorethea

Dorothea Lange stopped at a pea-pickers' camp in California in the last light of a February afternoon, took six frames of a woman with three children and drove on. She wrote down almost nothing: no name, no exact place, a few lines about frozen crops and sold tires. The photograph ran in a newspaper within days, relief was sent, and the image became the face of the Depression. It was more than forty years before a reporter tracked down the woman in it, who was a Cherokee mother of seven called Florence Owens Thompson and who said she had never seen a penny from the most famous picture in the country.

Meaning

gift of God

The Greek compound is transparent and is the same pair of words that make Theodore, reversed. This spelling changes the middle vowel, which is unstressed and produces no audible difference at all — the sort of alteration that happens when a name is written from hearing rather than copied from a page, and which the American record is full of.

How the name formed

  1. Greek words for a gift and for God
  2. Dorothea in use across Christian Europe
  3. English produces Dorothy and keeps Dorothea beside it
  4. a photographer makes the fuller form famous
  5. Dorethea appears in American records in the 1910s

Related forms: Dorothea · Dorothy · Dorofeya

Four syllables with the weight on the third. The altered vowel sits in the second syllable, which is the weakest in the word and the reason nobody hears the difference.

Fashion outlook

Dorethea sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Thea and Dot are both available and belong to completely different decades.
  • The meaning is warm, clear and easy to explain to a child.
  • It is a genuinely old name that has never been fashionable enough to date badly.
What to consider
  • Dorothea is the standard spelling and this one will be corrected regularly.
  • Four syllables is a great deal of name for a small child.
  • It reads as belonging to the early twentieth century in America.
