Where it comes from

Our story of Dorena

There is a Dorena in Oregon, on a reservoir in the Cascade foothills, and the usual account of its name is that a postmaster or a railway official built it out of the first halves of two local women's names and submitted the result. American place names were manufactured this way constantly, especially by railway companies laying out towns faster than anyone could think of names for them. Texarkana splices two states, and there are dozens of towns built from a founder's daughters. Post office departments encouraged it, because they rejected names that duplicated an existing office in the same state, and a spliced name was unlikely to collide. The practice produced a layer of American place names that look like they must be Indigenous or Spanish and are in fact the initials of a board of directors.

Not established

Dora with a lengthening ending and Doreen respelled are both plausible, and they lead to different places — a Greek word about gifts in one direction and an Irish name in the other. The registers hold this spelling alone, so the question stays open.

Pronouncing Dorena

duh-REE-nuh

Three syllables with the stress in the middle. Some families say dor-AY-nuh instead, giving the middle vowel its other value, and nothing on the page settles it.

Dorena sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1966, with 31 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Dorena sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves detach as short forms and neither sounds like the other.
  • Middle stress on three syllables is the easiest rhythm English offers.
  • It is uncommon while containing nothing a reader has to be taught.
What to consider
  • Doreena, Doreen and Darena are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • The middle vowel has two readings, so the name is said two ways.
  • Neither parent name can be confirmed, so the meaning has two possible routes.
