Where it comes from

The story of Dorathea

Dorothea came into English in the later Middle Ages and was worn down in daily use to Dorothy, Doll and Dolly. By about 1700 doll had also become the word for a child's toy figure, taken from that pet name, and it has kept the job ever since. In 1841 Dorothea Dix, a Boston schoolteacher, went to teach a Sunday class in the East Cambridge jail and found mentally ill prisoners held in unheated cells. She spent the next two years visiting jails and almshouses across Massachusetts, laid her findings before the legislature in 1843, and went on to help found or enlarge more than thirty hospitals.

Fashion outlook

Dorathea sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled, easily explained meaning: gift of God.
  • Carries four established nicknames, Dora, Thea, Dot and Dolly.
  • A long history in English, with a distinguished bearer in Dorothea Dix.
What to consider
  • Dorothea is the spelling everyone expects, so Dorathea will be corrected, sometimes even in official records.
  • Four syllables is a lot for daily use, and most Dorotheas end up known by a short form.
  • It reads as old-fashioned to many people, which is part of the charm for some families and a drawback for others.
