The story of Dontae
Durante was an ordinary medieval Italian name and Dante its everyday short form; the poet who carried it wrote the Commedia and made it internationally known. American naming took up Dante in the twentieth century and then produced a set of respellings — Dontae, Donte, Dontay, Dantae — which are said much the same way and spelled quite differently. They belong to a wider American practice of respelling a borrowed name to make it one's own, which is a real and productive habit rather than a mistake.

enduring — if the Dante reading holds
Italian Dante is short for Durante, from Latin durans, 'lasting, enduring', and that reading is settled for it. Dontae is not documented as descending from Dante: it also sits among the Don- and D- prefixed American names of the later twentieth century, where the shape is doing the work. Both roads are plausible and the record does not choose between them.

The Brannon test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Dontae's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Brannon climbed just as high around 1980, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Brannon's path sketches the road Dontae is walking now.

The trade-off
- Don and Tae are both natural short forms and Don is a full name of its own.
- Two clear syllables that every English speaker says correctly at first sight.
- Familiar-sounding through Dante without being Dante.
- Dontae, Donte, Dontay and Dante are all in use and none of these spellings is standard.
- Its descent from Dante is likely rather than recorded, so a firm etymology overstates it.
