The story of Donel
Donnybrook is a district of Dublin, and for six hundred years it held an annual fair under a royal charter. By the early nineteenth century the fair had a reputation: it ran for a fortnight, the drinking was continuous, and the faction fights were an established feature rather than an accident. Accounts from the time describe men carrying blackthorn sticks specifically for the purpose. The city's residents petitioned repeatedly, and in the eighteen-fifties a group of them bought out the charter and simply shut it down. By then the word had emigrated. American newspapers had picked it up for any scene of general disorder, and it settled into ordinary American usage for a brawl, a chaotic meeting or a messy political fight, where it remains — long after the fair, the sticks and most memory of the place.

world-ruler, or God is my judge
If it shortens Donald it descends from a Gaelic compound joining a word for the world to one for a ruler. If it shortens Daniel it is a Hebrew sentence about judgment. The two are unrelated and this spelling cannot choose between them.

Two syllables with the stress at the back. Some families say DON-ul with front stress instead, which pulls the name toward Donald, and nothing on the page settles it.

Fashion outlook
Donel sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Both halves detach as short forms and neither sounds like the other.
- Five letters with no silent ones make it quick to write and simple to spell aloud.
- It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
- Donnell, Donal and Darnell will all be written for it.
- Stress placement is unsettled, so strangers will say it two ways.
- The two possible parent names are unrelated, so the meaning question has two answers.
