Its central character was a small boy orphaned by the war in Italy, brought to the United States by soldiers, and the strip was relentlessly sentimental in a way that made it either beloved or unbearable depending on the reader. It also did something unusual for a daily comic: it kept returning to displaced children as a subject, at a time when the phrase had a very specific and recent meaning for its audience. There was a film. The name appeared in American birth records while the strip was running and thinned out afterward, which is the ordinary arc for a name carried by one character.
