Where it comes from

The story of Donal

The written Irish form is Domhnall, and it looks nothing like the spoken one because Irish spelling records consonants that stopped being pronounced centuries ago. The mh in the middle went first, softening to a w sound and then vanishing; the second l held on. What was left in speech was two syllables, and Ireland eventually wrote them down the way they were said. Scotland, working from the same original, kept the d at the end and produced Donald, which then traveled far further because Scottish names traveled further. Donal stayed at home. In America it is rare, and it is recorded for both sexes, largely because it sits so close to Donna on a form.

Fashion outlook

Donal sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is the everyday Irish form, in current use in Ireland rather than a revival.
  • Don is a ready short form with no explanation required.
  • It is far less common than Donald while being just as readable.
What to consider
  • Americans will write Donald, and forms will correct it.
  • The spelling is recorded for girls as well as boys in the United States, largely through confusion with Donna.
  • The Irish spelling Domhnall will look unrelated to anyone who meets both.
