rare

Dolphus is Adolphus with its first syllable worn away, and it belongs to a name that was ordinary in Europe for a thousand years and became unusable in about ten. Kings, dukes and generals carried it; so did a very large number of perfectly unremarkable men; and then one man made it impossible.

How old is the name Dolphus?

Where it comes from

The story of Dolphus

The Swedish king Gustavus Adolphus is the reason a good deal of Europe is Protestant. He took an army into the Thirty Years War when the Catholic side was winning everywhere, and he had rebuilt it from the ground up: lighter guns that could be moved during a battle rather than sited before it, mixed formations of musket and pike that could fire and advance, and a supply system that let him keep the field. He won repeatedly and was killed in fog at Lutzen, riding into the enemy line because he could not see it. Military historians still argue about how much of modern land warfare starts with him. The name he carried was in continuous European use until the middle of the twentieth century, when a different man ended it.

Meaning

Noble wolf

The Germanic elements are athal, noble, and wulf, wolf, and the compound was a standard aristocratic name of the early Middle Ages. Wolf names were common and carried no menace: the animal stood for a warrior. The Latin ending on Adolphus is a scholarly addition that European courts used on formal documents, and the clipped form is what ordinary speech did with it.

Dolphus sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1917, with 33 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Dolphus sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Short, firm and easy to say, with a clear meaning that fits in two words.
  • It is genuinely old rather than merely old-fashioned, with a documented line back to early medieval Europe.
  • Dolph is a strong one-syllable everyday form available immediately.
What to consider
  • The full name it comes from is unusable in most of the world and the association travels to the clipping.
  • It is strongly dated to the nineteenth century in American records.
  • It will be heard as Rudolphus and as Dolphin, and children will find the second.
