The story of Dolph
Adolph Sutro, a Prussian-born engineer, spent a decade driving a tunnel nearly four miles long under Nevada's Comstock Lode to drain and ventilate the silver mines; he sold out at the right moment, invested in San Francisco land, built the Sutro Baths and was elected mayor in 1894. Adolphus Busch, another German immigrant, married Lilly Anheuser, daughter of a St. Louis brewer, and turned her father's business into Anheuser-Busch, pioneering pasteurized bottled beer and refrigerated railcars. Dolph was the everyday short form of names like theirs.
