Two consonant clusters have vanished on the way from Irish to English. The Gaelic spelling carries a bh and an sh that are either silent or reduced to a breath in speech, and the clerks who wrote the name down in English wrote what they heard, which was five letters where the Irish had nine or ten.

Where it comes from

The story of Dolan

Two separate Irish families became this one English surname. One belonged to Connacht, in what is now Galway and Roscommon; another was recorded in Ulster, in the country around Fermanagh, and the two are not related. Their Gaelic names were different and both were anglicized, by ear, into the same five letters — which is how a surname ends up with two etymologies and no way to choose between them. Anybody carrying it has a claim on both histories and no way to establish either.

Dolan sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1996, with 36 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Dolan sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, plain and needs no explaining to anybody.
  • The surname style is entirely current for a first name.
  • It is genuinely rare while sounding completely familiar.
What to consider
  • No meaning can be given, because two unrelated families share the spelling.
  • It still reads as a surname to many people.
  • It has never been common enough to have a settled short form.
