Dodie is the kind of name a baby makes. Repeat one syllable of a long name, drop everything else, and you have a form a two-year-old can actually say, which is why nursery names across unrelated languages look so alike: they are limited by the same small mouth.

Where it comes from

The story of Dodie

The English novelist Dodie Smith was christened Dorothy and used the nursery form all her life. She wrote plays that filled West End theaters in the nineteen-thirties, then a novel begun in California while she was homesick for England, narrated by a seventeen-year-old girl sitting in a kitchen sink in a crumbling castle, which has never been out of print. A few years later she wrote another about a couple whose puppies are stolen by a woman who wants their coats, and that one was made into a cartoon and became one of the best-known children's stories in the world. Both books came from the same person under a name her family had given her before she could pronounce her own.

Gift of God

The likeliest full name behind it is Dorothy, from Greek doron, a gift, and theos, God. Dolores is also possible and means something entirely different. A reduplicated pet form keeps only a consonant and a vowel and throws the rest away, so it cannot be traced back with confidence to either.

Pronouncing Dodie

DOH-dee

Two syllables with the stress at the front and a long first vowel, since a single d between vowels does not shorten it. Doddie, with two, would be said with a short o and is a different name.

Fashion outlook

Dodie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Short, warm and among the easiest names in English for a small child to say.
  • It has a documented literary bearer who used it as her working name.
  • A long formal name sits behind it if one is wanted later.
What to consider
  • It is a nursery form on a certificate and reads as one at every age.
  • Dodi, Doddie and Dody all exist for the same sound.
  • The full name behind it cannot be recovered, so questions about meaning have no short answer.
