Where it comes from

Our story of Djuana

The letters dj together are a French solution to a problem French had. French j says a soft zh sound, so when nineteenth-century French writers needed to transliterate the hard j of Arabic, Turkish and several African languages, they wrote dj to force it — Djibouti, djellaba, djinn, Fedja. English, whose own j already says the right sound, borrowed the convention anyway for a period, which is why English texts of that era have djinn and Djakarta. English has since dropped it almost everywhere: Jakarta, jinn, Jerba. It survives in Serbo-Croatian transliteration and in a scattering of proper names, and it survives in American given names as a device that signals foreignness without pointing at any particular language.

The Spanish name inside it is the feminine of Juan, from the Hebrew sentence behind John. But the spelling is not Spanish, and whether a family meant that name or built something from the sound is not recorded.

Djuana sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1964, with 190 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Djuana sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Middle stress on three syllables is the easiest rhythm English offers.
  • Juana detaches cleanly and is a complete Spanish name.
  • The spelling is genuinely distinctive without being hard to say.
What to consider
  • Juana, Dejuana and Duana are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • The silent d has to be given aloud every time.
  • Spanish readers will see a device their language does not use.
