The story of Dionne
Dionysus was the Greek god of wine, ecstasy and the theater — tragedy and comedy were both performed at his festival. Saint Dionysius carried the name into Christian use, and French made Denis, Denise and Dionne. The name became visible in twentieth-century America partly through the Dionne quintuplets of 1934, and it peaked around 1968.

of Zeus, of Nysa
Through Dionysus, whose name joins Dio- (the genitive of Zeus) to Nysa, a mountain in the myths that no geographer has ever identified. The French Dionne is a feminine of Dion. A separate Dionne is a French-Canadian surname, and both feed the modern name.

The Jannie test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Dionne's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jannie climbed just as high around 1910, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jannie's path sketches the road Dionne is walking now.
Dionne sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A major Greek god with a genuinely interesting cultural role stands behind it.
- The end stress gives it a strong rhythm against a front-stressed surname.
- Dee is a ready-made short form with its own record.
- The Nysa element has never been located and the meaning is only half recovered.
- Dion is the masculine form and the two are easily confused in speech.
- It is closely dated to the 1960s and 1970s.
