The story of Dietrich
Theodoric the Ostrogoth took Italy in 493 and ruled it well enough that his mausoleum still stands at Ravenna. German medieval poetry turned him into Dietrich von Bern, a hero of the epic cycle, and the name has been German ever since. It reached American records with German emigration in the nineteenth century and is used steadily, if quietly, since. Derrick is the English development of the same name.
Meaning
ruler of the people

The Carlis test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Dietrich's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Carlis climbed just as high around 1946, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Carlis's path sketches the road Dietrich is walking now.
Dietrich sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
