Where it comes from

The story of Dieter

The first element has an unusually wide family. The old word for the people, theod, gives the German deutsch and the country's own name for itself, Deutschland — the land of the people. It gives Dutch, which English applied to the wrong set of neighbors and never corrected. It gives Teutonic, by a Latin route. And it sits inside every German name beginning Diet-. Meanwhile the word diet, for a parliament — the Diet of Worms, the Imperial Diet — is not related to any of that: it comes from a Latin word about a day's business, and the resemblance to the front of this name is an accident that has fooled people for centuries.

Meaning

Ruler of the people

The name is a shortened Dietrich or Dietmar: the first element means the people, the second is about rule or fame. Germanic names were built from a fixed stock of such elements, combined almost at will, and this one joins two of the commonest.

How the name formed

  2. Dietrich

Dieter sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1967, with 36 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Dieter sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, firm and easy for English speakers despite being thoroughly German.
  • The meaning is settled and can be taken apart and explained piece by piece.
  • It is unmistakably itself with no American near neighbors.
What to consider
  • The first syllable is an English word about eating, and children will find that.
  • It reads as distinctly German, which is either the point or a consideration.
  • Dieter, Deiter and Deter are all possible spellings from the sound.
