Dickie was a full legal name in America for two generations. It comes from Richard by way of a medieval English habit of making pet names by rhyming — Rick to Dick, the way Rob became Bob and Meg became Peg — and in the South especially it was entered on certificates outright rather than shortened from anything.

The story of Dickie
Rhyming pet forms were a genuine medieval English fashion and they produced several names that look unrelated to their sources: Richard to Rick to Dick, Robert to Rob to Bob, Margaret to Meg to Peg, Mary to Molly to Polly. Nobody has explained why English did this. Dickie added the affectionate ending and became a name in its own right, and it was ordinary in America until the second half of the last century, when the short form acquired a second and unrelated meaning in general English.
Meaning
strong ruler
Richard joins Germanic ric, rule or power, with hard, brave or firm. The derivation is not disputed. The route from Richard to Dick is the odd part and it is well documented: medieval English shortened the name to Rick and then rhymed the initial consonant into a new one, which is a habit English had and no other European language shared at that scale. The meaning survives all of it.

Fashion outlook
Dickie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Richard is available as a formal long form with nine hundred years of English use behind it.
- The rhyming history is genuinely odd and easy to explain in a sentence.
- Rick is available as an alternative short form that carries none of the difficulty.
- The short form inside this name is an ordinary English word for a body part and an insult, and that meaning arrived after the name was established. It cannot be argued away, a child will meet it immediately, and it is the central fact to weigh here.
- The name is very strongly associated with the middle of the last century.
- It goes to girls as well in this spelling, so on a form it settles less than it appears to.
