Where it comes from

The story of Dickey

Tom, Dick and Harry were not picked at random. The phrase works because those three names, in the centuries it was coined, covered an enormous share of the men in England — a shorthand for anybody at all, precisely because you could not walk down a street without meeting all three. That is the sign of a name doing its job. And it is also what put this one in trouble. A name common enough to stand for everybody is a name available for other uses, and once English had taken the word for a series of ordinary objects and then for something blunter, parents stopped choosing it. The full name went on untouched. The short form fell off a cliff inside one generation, which is a thing that happens to names and almost never happens slowly.

Meaning

Hard ruler, brave ruler

Richard is a Germanic compound: a first element meaning strong or hard, and a second meaning rule. The reading is not in dispute. None of it travels down to the nickname, which came about by sound rather than by sense.

Dickey sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1948, with 38 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Dickey sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The name behind it is ancient, royal and understood in every European language.
  • It is warm and unpretentious in a way formal names are not.
  • Richard sits behind it as a complete formal version.
What to consider
  • The short form inside it carries a slang meaning that a child will meet at school.
  • It reads as a nickname, so the long form will be assumed on documents.
  • Dicky, Dickie and Dickey are all in use and his will be written as whichever the writer prefers.
