The story of Diantha
Theophrastus, who studied under Aristotle and effectively founded botany as a subject, gave a flower the name that means the flower of Zeus, and it has stuck for well over two thousand years. Linnaeus took it up as the genus name, and it now covers the carnations, the sweet williams and the small fringed pinks that grow in old walls. The English word pink came from the flower rather than the other way round: the name referred to the fringed, pinked edge of the petals, as in pinking shears, and only later moved across to the color, which means the color is named after the flower and not the reverse. Carnation has its own unsettled history, with a Latin word for flesh and a corruption of coronation both proposed and neither settled. The genus name is the only part of the group with a clean account of itself.
Meaning
flower of Zeus
The Greek compound joins the word for a god — specifically the genitive of the sky god's name — to the word for a flower. Whether a particular family meant the flower or meant Diana with a decorative ending is a separate question the record cannot answer, but the plant name itself is unambiguous.

dy-AN-thuh
Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The th is the voiceless one of thin, because it is a Greek theta and not an English th from a native word.

Fashion outlook
Diantha sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is a flower name that almost nobody else is using.
- The meaning is documented and unusually flattering.
- Three short forms come out of it and none of them sounds like the others.
- Diantha, Dianthe and Dianthia are all in the record and the spelling will need giving.
- Most people will hear Diana and write that instead.
- The th is easy to soften into the wrong sound, and the name is then a different one.
Nobody names a baby alone.
