Dezaray
Feminine · “Desired”
Dezaray is a French name in an American disguise, and the disguise is thorough: every letter that marked it as French has been replaced by one that spells the same sound in English. What is left says nothing about where it came from, which was very likely the point.

The story of Dezaray
The word underneath is better than the name usually gets credit for. Latin desiderare, to desire, is built on the word for a star — the same sidus that gives sidereal and consider — and the older sense seems to have belonged to the augurs, the men whose job was reading the sky: to desire was to look for a star and not find it, to await what is not there. Longing, in other words, was described as a failed observation. The French name kept the wanting and lost the astronomy, and the American respelling kept the sound and lost the French. Each stage threw away the layer beneath it, and what survives is a word about wanting something that has not arrived yet.
Meaning
Desired
The French name means desired or longed-for, and it was given as a statement about a wanted child. The respelling changes not one sound of it, and the meaning travels through intact whatever the letters look like.

Fashion outlook
Dezaray sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The meaning is settled, simple and unusually direct — it says something about the child's arrival rather than about her character.
- The spelling removes every accent and silent letter, so it survives American forms intact.
- The back stress makes it carry well.
- Desiree, Desirae, Dezirae and Dezaray are all in use, and hers is one of the least common.
- The respelling hides the French origin, so the meaning has to be explained rather than seen.
- The first syllable can be heard as Des or Dez, and both spellings of the short form follow.
