Where it comes from

Our story of Devra

The book of Judges says that she sat under a particular palm tree between two towns in the hill country, and that the Israelites came up to her there for judgment. The detail is oddly specific and it stuck: the tree is named, located and treated as a fixed point on the map, which is how legal geography worked before there were buildings for it. Courts were held at recognizable landmarks, under trees, at fords, on hilltops, and everybody knew where to go. The Anglo-Saxons did the same thing; a great many English hundred courts met at a named tree or stone. The story is about a judge and a general, and the small piece that survives longest is the address.

Fashion outlook

Devra sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, spelled as it sounds, and read correctly at first sight by nearly everyone.
  • It writes the name the way it is actually said, which is a defensible thing for a spelling to do.
  • Dev comes off the front as a short form and works for either sex.
What to consider
  • Debra and Deborah are both far commoner, so this spelling will be corrected regularly.
  • It will be heard as Debra by almost anybody catching it once.
  • No origin is documented directly, so the meaning question belongs to the longer name.
