Devere is a Norman surname of the first rank and also exactly the shape American families were building names in when it charted, so the record holds both kinds. The French word at the back of it is at the center of a famous piece of folklore that turns out to have the story the wrong way round.

Where it comes from

The story of Devere

Everybody has heard that Cinderella's slipper was originally fur and became glass through a mistranslation, because the French words for glass and for a particular squirrel fur sound identical. It is a good story and it is backwards. Perrault wrote glass, deliberately and in print, in sixteen ninety-seven; the fur explanation was proposed a century and a half later by writers who found a glass shoe implausible and looked for a way to tidy it up. Balzac and others repeated it until it became common knowledge. Earlier versions of the tale from other countries have gold slippers, embroidered ones and no slippers at all, so there is no original fur version to have been mistranslated. The fur itself is real — it is the heraldic vair, a bluish-grey squirrel pelt sewn in a pattern that heralds still draw — and the word survives in coats of arms and nowhere else.

Meaning

from Ver

The surname names a place in Normandy, in the ordinary manner of Norman family names: a preposition and a village. Read instead as an American build, the front is a free prefix and the back is a sound, and the compound means nothing. The record contains both.

How the name formed

  1. de Ver
  2. Devere

Pronouncing Devere

duh-VEER

Two syllables with the stress at the back. Some American families say DEE-veer with front stress instead, which is the reading that treats it as a built name rather than a surname.

Devere sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1916, with 26 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Devere sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Dev detaches cleanly and works in any setting.
  • Back stress gives a two-syllable name a firm landing.
  • It carries an old and genuinely documented surname behind it.
What to consider
  • De Vere, Devere and Devier are all recorded and the spelling will need giving.
  • Stress placement is unsettled, so strangers will say it two ways.
  • Which of the two origins applies to a given family is not recorded.
