Deva
Feminine · “a shining one”
Deva is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 964 girls against 22 boys since 1880.
Deva is four letters and two entirely separate histories, one Indian and one Roman-British, and they have nothing to do with each other except that both are about something more than human. The name has been given to sons and daughters alike in America, and neither history settles which it should be.

Where it comes from

The story of Deva
The Romans built a legionary fortress on a river in the north-west of Britain and called it Deva, after the river itself. The river is the Dee, and its old British name meant the goddess — a common enough thing in Celtic Britain, where rivers were addressed as divine and named accordingly rather than being named after anything else. The fortress became Chester and the name Deva stayed in the records; the river kept the goddess in its own name and still has her. Meanwhile, the same string of sounds took a very different path in Iran. The Sanskrit devas were gods, but in the Zoroastrian reform of Persian religion the closely related daevas were demons — the word was deliberately turned upside down. One inherited word therefore names the divine on one side of a mountain range and the diabolical on the other, which is an unusual thing for four letters to manage.
Meaning
a shining one; a god
In Sanskrit deva means a god or celestial being, and the word is built on a root meaning to shine — the same root that runs through the Latin and Greek words for a god. It is grammatically masculine; devi is the feminine, and it is devi rather than deva that names a goddess. American use has not observed that distinction, which is worth knowing rather than worrying about, since the name arrived here as a sound rather than as a piece of Sanskrit grammar.
How the name formed
- A root meaning to shine gives words for gods across Indo-European languages
- Sanskrit deva names a god; Zoroastrian Persian turns the word into a demon
- The Romans name their fortress on the Dee Deva, after the river goddess
- The name enters American records for both sons and daughters

Pronouncing Deva
DAY-vuh
Two syllables with the stress at the front. DEE-vuh is also heard in America, which makes the name sound like the Italian word for an operatic star; the Sanskrit vowel is closer to the first version, and a family that wants it should say so early.

Fashion outlook
Deva sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Very short, entirely phonetic, and spelled the same way in every language that uses it
- Real depth behind it in two separate traditions, either of which can be told to a child
- Works for a son or a daughter without any adjustment
- The two pronunciations point in different directions, and one of them borrows the associations of the word diva.
- In Sanskrit the form is grammatically masculine, which matters to families who use the language.
- It is short enough to be mistaken for a nickname on a formal document.
